Weaving Build a sense of community both socially and artistically
This hands-on weaving project fosters collaboration, creativity, cooperation, and craftsmanship. Five students, work on a large scale (3’x 6’ foot looms). They build a sense of community both socially and artistically. The Fifth-grade students viewed a video produced by the Getty Museum, which explained the art of tapestry weaving. They watched as weavers from the Gobelins Manufactory in Paris showed how tapestries are made since the 1600s. Our project began with the building of looms. Students worked as teams, following safety standards to measure and cut wood. Next, they needed to space and hammer nails for the warp threads. Students discussed design options and worked together to execute ideas. They were instructed in various weaving techniques both through hands-on instruction and instructional videos. They chose from a variety of yarns and materials to create their designs. As the project progressed, the tapestries began to change, and the students became more involved in making complex design decisions.
