The 2nd-grade students had an exciting opportunity to learn collaboratively from five of their specialist teachers as they researched, designed, created, and played ocarina. In Spanish class, students discovered the ocarina is a musical instrument made over 12,000 years ago by the ancient Mayan, Aztec, Incan, and Taino people who lived throughout North, Central, and South America. In TechEd, students designed and 3-D printed their ocarinas based on what they had learned about the ancient design and exploring more modern versions of the musical instrument. Students painted their ocarinas in art class to make each one unique using similar designs and patterns of the ancient cultures they studied. Students examined how an ocarina worked in music class and learned to play a Puerto Rican folk song about a coqui frog. Finally, in the library, students read an encyclopedia article about the coqui frog. They selected and recorded the three most interesting facts they learned, then wrote an accurate citation for the article. Throughout this process, students learned about the importance of functional design in creating a musical instrument and the role of research in this process.
