Third-grade students from Henry Barnard School, along with RIC students from ELED 420 Children’s Literature and TechEd and Arts classes, created this work as part of a collaboration celebrating the power of literature and art to engage the mind. The project began with a review of the children’s book Life Doesn’t Frighten Me by Maya Angelou and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The students also viewed the work of the American painter Cy Twombly. Students noticed how both artists used “mark-making” as a means of expression. The artist’s work inspired the students to make their own mark. The result was a collaborative work that included 3D printed pieces used to connect paper straws to form prisms and layered on the fabric.
